Prediction: Mobile printers, projectors, and scanners make headway
In 2012, we will see several small photo printers built specifically to print from iPhones, iPads, and other smartphones and tablets. Although by the end of the year most new Wi-Fi printers will be compatible with Apple's AirPrint, few people will use it as most printer manufacturers will have their own, more powerful mobile printing apps.

Here are Five Free Software Programs Everyone Should Have
When I put together a machine for family or friends, I usually install a bunch of free software that I personally use and recommend to others. They are programs that are close to being definitive and needed. Generally speaking, these programs fall into two categories.
The first category is comprised of programs that are best of breed—commercial or otherwise. This includes programs that are not as slick as commercial products, but they're are easier to use or I prefer them because of certain features.
The second category contains the programs that are clearly inferior to commercial software, but they're more than adequate for everyday use or non-professional use. In other words, programs for when you don't necessarily need the high-powered commercial software. These programs also make good adjuncts to commercial software.
The good news is that all of these programs are free.

Software predicted virus risk in California epidemic
A computer model of the spread of West Nile virus was able to predict areas where human cases would be concentrated, especially around Sacramento in 2005. The success of the model, say researchers, depended on its focus on biological factors and on a high volume of reports from members of the public.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — A computerized epidemiological model of the spread of the mosquito-borne West Nile virus in 17 counties of California in 2005 successfully predicted where 81.6 percent of human cases of the disease would arise and defined high-risk areas where the risk of infection turned out to be 39 times higher than in low-risk areas, according to newly published research. The DYCAST software used in those predictions is now open-source and is being applied to other diseases.
Free Software to be Innovative In University
Marrying technology, innovation and this curious internet thing of giving stuff away for free, consultant and Cong-base Englishman, Lloyd Hardy, is hoping to kick start an online learning revolution.
Hardy proposes to deliver university courses for free over the internet using an “open source” model. Open source has revolutionised the delivery of technology since the late 1990s. Famous examples include the Linux operating system, the Firefox browser, the Apache web server and the OpenOffice suite. These and thousands of other products are available at the equally famous price of zero euro.
“My idea is that would-be students who, for a variety of reasons are unable to learn in the traditional way are able to access tuition from graduates working in industry in a structured learning environment in a virtual classroom,” said Hardy of the Free Software University (FSU). Course delivery will suit different learning styles since it will come in video, written and audio formats.
